It refers to the placement of electrical wires via the studs and the boxes for switches and outlets. In other words, a rough-in refers to the process of pulling all electrical cables through studs and other frame members and inserting them into wall and ceiling boxes. Other appliances such as switches, lights, and other appliances are not connected or not included.
Preparation for Rough-In Electrical Wiring

Assessment of the Current Wiring

- Fixing the Frames
Once the location is fixed the box must be nailed exactly as per the location. The boxes must expand out in front of the stud in order for the front edge of the box to be flat with the wall covering you’ll be employing.
The next step is to drill the holes for proper wiring. The holes must be drilled in the path of the wire. The holes must be one-fourth behind the wall on which the stud is fixed. For proper alignment, one must mark the boxes with a pencil. In this way, alignment will be maintained among the boxes and there will be no need to measure again and again.
- Installing Cable
Once the holes are drilled the next step is to install wires between the boxes. For this purpose, one must take out 10-12 ft of cable from the wire or cable roll. Push the end of the cable through the holes in the studs until you reach the location of the next box, starting at the stud holes by one box. The process must be repeated so that all the boxes receive wire equally.
- Connect the Cable
When all the wires are installed, then it is time to connect the cable to the stud. For this purpose, one can use cable staples. It is done by placing the cable staples far enough away from the boxes for the cable to have some wiggle room. While doing this, the cable must be straight otherwise it will be damaged.
- Breaker Box
Make your final run to the cable box once you’ve completed all of the cable connections between the boxes. Leave around 4 feet of excess cable at the cable box so that the electrician has plenty of cables to deal with when connecting the circuit to the breaker. It is recommended that one must sidestep the long wiring. One can use cable staples at intervals so that long wiring is not there.
- Grouping the Cables
The cables of the same color must be grouped under one head. This is the last step in the whole rough-in wiring process. For grouping them together one can use tape or a zip tie can also work.
